How to Calculate Topsoil

To calculate topsoil volume, multiply the length and width of your area in feet by the desired depth in feet (convert inches by dividing by 12), then divide by 27 to convert cubic feet to cubic yards.

Topsoil Formula:
Cubic Yards = (Length × Width × Depth in ft) ÷ 27

Example: 30 ft × 20 ft area at 6 inches deep = (30 × 20 × 0.5) ÷ 27 = 11.1 cubic yards

How Much Topsoil Do Different Projects Need?

Project TypeRecommended Depth
New lawn (grass seed)4–6 inches
New lawn (sod installation)4 inches minimum
Vegetable garden8–12 inches
Raised flower bed8–10 inches
Top dressing existing lawn¼ – ½ inch
Leveling / grading2–4 inches

Topsoil vs. Fill Dirt vs. Garden Soil

Topsoil is the upper 2–8 inches of natural soil and contains organic matter. It's ideal for lawns, beds, and general landscaping. Fill dirt contains no organic matter and is used for grading, raising elevation, and structural fill — plants won't thrive in it alone. Garden soil (or potting mix) is a premium, pre-blended product designed for raised beds and containers.

Topsoil Cost Estimates

Topsoil TypeCost per Cubic Yard (Bulk)
Fill Dirt$5–$15
Basic Topsoil$12–$30
Screened Topsoil$25–$55
Premium Blended Topsoil$40–$75

Tips for Ordering and Spreading Topsoil

  • Always order 10–15% more than your calculation — topsoil compacts significantly
  • Test your existing soil pH before importing topsoil to ensure compatibility
  • For lawn projects, till new topsoil 2–3 inches into existing soil at the border
  • Water thoroughly after spreading to help the soil settle before seeding or sodding
  • One standard dump truck carries approximately 10–14 cubic yards
Frequently Asked Questions
How many cubic yards of topsoil do I need for a new lawn?
For seeding a new lawn, plan for 4–6 inches of topsoil, which equals roughly 0.15–0.19 cubic yards per 100 square feet. A 5,000 sq ft lawn at 4 inches deep needs approximately 62 cubic yards.
How much does a cubic yard of topsoil weigh?
A cubic yard of topsoil weighs approximately 1,000–1,400 lbs (about 1,200 lbs on average), depending on moisture content and soil composition. This is important for calculating delivery truck loads.
How much topsoil fits in a pickup truck?
A standard half-ton pickup truck bed can safely carry about ½ cubic yard of topsoil (roughly 600–700 lbs). A full-size truck bed holds about 1 cubic yard if level. Exceeding this strains the suspension and is dangerous.
What is the difference between topsoil and compost?
Topsoil is natural soil containing minerals and some organic matter. Compost is fully decomposed organic matter and is used to enrich soil. Mixing topsoil with 20–30% compost creates an excellent growing medium for lawns and gardens.
Should I till before adding topsoil?
For new lawns, tilling the existing soil 4–6 inches deep before adding topsoil helps prevent a hard-pan layer that roots can't penetrate. For top-dressing, tilling is not needed — simply rake the topsoil into the existing surface.
