Grass Seed Rates by Type

Each grass species has a recommended seeding rate — the pounds of seed needed per 1,000 square feet. Seeding below the recommended rate leads to thin, weedy turf. Seeding too heavily wastes money and can cause damping-off disease.

Lawn Seeding Tips

  • Prepare soil before seeding: till, remove debris, apply starter fertilizer
  • Use a seed spreader (broadcast or drop) for even coverage
  • Make 2 passes at half-rate in perpendicular directions for best distribution
  • Rake seed lightly into the top ¼ inch of soil
  • Apply straw mulch at ¼ bale per 1,000 sq ft to retain moisture
  • Keep soil moist (not soaked) until germination — typically 10–21 days
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does grass seed take to germinate?
Germination time varies by grass type: Ryegrass germinates in 5–10 days, Tall Fescue in 7–14 days, Kentucky Bluegrass in 14–28 days, Bermudagrass in 10–30 days, and Zoysia in 14–21 days. Soil temperature and moisture are the biggest factors.
When is the best time to seed a lawn?
Cool-season grasses (fescue, bluegrass, ryegrass) seed best in late summer to early fall (August–October) in the North. Warm-season grasses (bermuda, zoysia, centipede) seed best in late spring (May–June) in the South.
Should I aerate before seeding?
Absolutely. Core aeration before overseeding dramatically improves seed-to-soil contact, germination rates, and overall success. For new lawns, tilling accomplishes the same goal. Aerate when soil is moist but not waterlogged.
How many bags of grass seed do I need for 1 acre?
At 5 lbs/1,000 sq ft for Tall Fescue: 1 acre (43,560 sq ft) needs approximately 218 lbs of seed, or about 4.4 bags of 50-lb seed. Kentucky Bluegrass at 3 lbs/1,000 sq ft needs about 130 lbs per acre.

Pro tip: For best germination, seed in early fall (cool-season grasses) or late spring (warm-season). Keep soil consistently moist for 3 weeks.
